History of Medical Colleges
1. KING EDWARD MEDICAL COLLEGE, LAHORE.
This college was founded in 1860 as Lahore Medical School. It is
the oldest Medical College of Pakistan. King Edward Medical College
has a very long tradition of excellence going back 138 years. This
is the second oldest seat of Medical Learning in the subcontinent,
the first being in Calcutta. King Edward Medical College is even
older than the University of Punjab, the latter being established
in 1870 as the Punjab University College. The university status
was granted in 1882. In 1860, the Lahore Medical School started
functioning in the Artillery Barracks at the present site of Government
College, Lahore. The attached hospital was located in a stable where
we have the Tibbi Police Station now. The first Principal was Dr.
J.B. Scriven (1860 - 1870). A total of 49 students were admitted,
and were taught by only two teachers, the Principal and one Professor.
Of these 49 students, 27 got their Medical Diplomas in 1863. In
1886 the Medical School was renamed as the Lahore Medical College.
In 1891, the Licentiate Diploma was re-designed and re-designated
as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The first
Principal after partition was Lt Col Ilahi Bukhsh. The present Principal
is Prof. Mumtaz Hassan. The Principal of King Edward Medical College,
Lahore is also the Chairman of Admission Board.
In 1870, the construction of the attached teaching hospital was
completed and it was named after the then Viceroy of India, Lord
Mayo (Mayo Hospital). During 1910-1915, new buildings were constructed
from King Edward Memorial Funds, and with the Sovereign permission
named King Edward Medical College. There were generous donations
by the rulers of various princely states of the Punjab; that is
why various college blocks bear the name of the donors. The major
ones are:
Patiala Block (Administrative block, library, lecture theatres)
Bhawalpur Block (Pathology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community
Medicine)
Farid Kot Block (Anatomy)
Kapurthala Block (Pharmacology)
In addition to M.B., B.S., this College also imparts teaching to
B.D.S. students of de' Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore.
The teaching hospitals affiliated with this college are Mayo Hospital,
Lady Willingdon Hospital and Lahore General Hospital (Department
of Neurosurgery).

2. FATIMA JINNAH MEDICAL COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, LAHORE.
Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore was established in 1948,
just a year after the birth of our country, the Islamic Republic
of Pakistan. The need for the immediate establishment of an institution
to train women in the medical profession was acutely felt. The father
of the nation, the late Quaid-i-Azam gave his blessings and approved
the name of his sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah to be associated with
this institution.
Fatima Jinnah Medical College admitted its first batch of 39 students
in October, 1948. Since then it has been training women not only
from all over Pakistan but also from the entire Muslim world and
some friendly brethren countries. Fatima Jinnah graduates are serving
not only in Pakistan but also all over the world. The first Principal
of this college was Prof. Shujaat Ali. The present principal is
Prof. Muhammad Akbar Chaudhry.
Teaching hospital attached to the college, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital
(550 beds), is now being extended on another 22 Kanals and will
provide another 400 beds. The name of this new hospital is Fatima
Jinnah Hospital. The Faculty is both male and female, all of them
being highly qualified teachers. The college has well-equipped laboratories,
air-conditioned dissection hall, lecture theatres with audio-visual
aids for teaching purposes, pathology museum, clinical academic
rooms, a well-equipped library and an auditorium for seminars and
international conferences.
The hostel for students is within walking distance from the college.
It consists of six blocks. Two new blocks are being built to accommodate
more students. At the moment there are around one thousand students
living in the hostel.

3. NISHTAR MEDICAL COLLEGE, MULTAN.
This college was established by the Government of the Punjab after
the creation of Pakistan. It started functioning on the first day
of October, 1951. It was the third Medical College in the Province
of the Punjab. It was named after the First Pakistani Governor of
Punjab, Late Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar. Clinical teaching is imparted
at the Nishtar Hospital, Multan which is situated in the college
campus. Fatima Jinnah Hospital for Women and the two Maternity and
Child Welfare Centres in Multan City are also attached to the college
for Domiciliary Maternity and Child Welfare training of students.
The first Principal was Dr. Muhmmad Jamal Bhutta. The present Principal
is his son Prof. Tariq Iqbal Bhutta.
A dental section for B.D.S. Degree has been added. First batch
of B.D.S. students was admitted in 1973-74 session. (Prospectus

The Nishtar Medical College remained affiliated with the University
of the Punjab, Lahore upto 1975-76, after which it has been affiliated
to the Bahauddin Zakaria University, Multan.

4. QUAID-E-AZAM MEDICAL COLLEGE, BAHAWALPUR.
This Medical College which was founded in 1970 and Bahawal Victoria
Hospital with which it is affiliated for clinical training of the
students have been providing health care facilities to a population
of around 12 millions and have been rendering yeoman's service to
the country by producing 3282 medical graduates till the year 1997.
From its period of infancy this institution has now blossomed into
a center of tertiary care and postgraduate courses, i.e. DOMS, DCP,
DCH, M.S. (Ortho) and FCPS in Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology, Neurosurgery
and other specialties and for MCPS in Dermatology. The first Principal
of this college was Prof. Alamdar Hussain. The present Principal
is Prof. Muhammad Amin.
The college campus has five separate hostels for male and female
students. College quadrangle is encircled by beautiful gardens.
A very large sports stadium, gymnasium, swimming pool and play grounds
are available for the students. There is a large residential colony
for teachers and doctors of Bahawal Victoria Hospital.
Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital is the affiliated teaching hospital
with more than 1300 beds with modern operation theatre - complex
and CT Scan facilities.
This is probably the only medical college in Pakistan, where Hand
and Limb Transplantation surgery is being done. Efforts are on to
set up departments of Paediatric Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Coronary
Angiography, Tissue Typing and Kidney Transplantation.
The Quaid-e-Azam Medical College remained affiliated with the University
of the Punjab, Lahore upto 1975-76, after which it has been affiliated
to the Islamia University Bahawalpur.

5. PUNJAB MEDICAL COLLEGE, FAISLABAD
Faisalabad is the third largest city of Pakistan, situated in the
centre of the Punjab, approximately 140 Km. from the provincial
capital, Lahore. Punjab Medical College, Faislabad was established
in 1973 and the admissions for the session 1973-74 were made in
March, 1974. The newly constructed college campus is situated on
Sargodha Road, adjacent to the University of Agriculture. It is
spread over an area of 158 acres. All the basic and clinical departments
have a highly qualified professional staff. Allied Hospital (1150
beds) and DHQ Hospital (500 beds), are attached with the college
for clinical training. Both of these hospitals are equipped with
the latest medical equipment. These hospitals are recognized in
Pakistan and abroad for post-graduate training in a number of medical
and surgical specialties. The college has six big hostels to provide
sufficient and separate accommodation to the boys and girls. The
first Principal was Prof. M. H. Toosi. The present Principal is
Prof. Obaid Ullah Khawaja. This college is affiliated to the University
of the Punjab, Lahore.

6. RAWALPINDI MEDICAL COLLEGE, RAWALPINDI
Admissions for 1973-74 session were made in March, 1974 and teaching
was started provisionally along with Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad.
The college was shifted in November, 1974 to its present site at
Tipu Road, Rawalpindi where all the Basic Departments had developed.
The teaching hospitals affiliated to the college are Holy Family
Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital, Rawalpindi General Hospital,
and Fauji Foundation Medical Centre. All teaching Hospitals provide
1278 beds for the patients. A new teaching hospital (414 beds) will
be operational by the end of 1998. The first Principal of this college
was Prof. M.H. Toosi. The present Principal is Prof. Muhammad Iqbal.
In addition to traditional library, college has an audiovisual
library, which has arrangement for instant review of medical video
programmes. CD-ROM facility is also available for literature search.
College offers variety of recreational facilities and extracurricular
activities for its students.

7. ALLAMA IQBAL MEDICAL COLLEGE, LAHORE.
This is the latest addition to medical colleges in the Punjab.
This institution was established on May 2, 1975-76 as Lahore Medical
College. To start with it was located in a portion of building of
the College of Community Medicine at Birdwood Road, Lahore. This
college is now housed in its new campus adjacent to the Punjab University
New Campus. The teaching hospital affiliated with this College is
Jinnah Hospital, which was inaugurated on February 2, 1996.. The
first Principal of this college was Prof. A.H. Awan. The present
Principal is Prof. Khalil-ur-Rehman.
Today Allama Iqbal Medical Complex has a beautiful campus spread
over an area of 103 acres. This college is affiliated to the University
of the Punjab, Lahore.
